TIGHT VACATION BUDGET? TRY A STAYCATION

Best and worst cities for staycations according to a WalletHub survey.
Still want to vacation this summer, but trying to figure out how far your budget would stretch for a trip away? With nearly 72% of Americans expected to travel this summer despite significant inflation driving up travel costs, personal-finance company WalletHub’s latest survey, 2026’s Best & Worst Cities for Staycations, suggests a wonderful vacation can exist more locally. WalletHub evaluated 182 cities across 41 key factors that measure both affordability and entertainment value. The study considered metrics ranging from the number of parks per capita to the average cost of restaurant meals. Would it surprise you that respondents named Orlando, FL as #1? WalletHub Analyst Chip Lupo explains that are just “so many different things to do in the city… amusement parks, water parks, nightlife activities, festivals, zoos and arcades per capita, making it easy to plan a full week of unique and enjoyable outings every day.” He added, “The abundance of ice cream shops around the city also provides the perfect way to stay cool during warm summer days.” The rest of the top 10 are: Cincinnati, OH; Las Vegas, NV; St. Louis, MO; Honolulu, HI; Salt Lake City, UT; Atlanta, GA; Tampa, FL; Chicago, IL; and Portland, ME. The bottom 10 are Oakland, CA; Santa Ana, CA; Newark, NJ; Hialeah, FL; Laredo, TX; Irving, TX; Chula Vista, CA; Fremont, CA; Yonkers, NY; and Pearl City, HI. If you do decide to have a staycation, here are some activities that won’t break the bank, according to Andrew Burnstine, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Lynn University. “Public parks greenways and nature preserves provide completely free access to outdoor fun… These low-cost outings encourage exercise and bonding time in a natural setting. Host a backyard campout, create a DIY family game day or field day with relay races and obstacle courses using items you already have at home. Visit free community attractions like public libraries, museums, and cultural centers that host free events or offer complimentary admission days… Fun macro trends reveal that 90% of museums across the United States provide substantial family discounts and at least 60% offer completely free admission days at least once a month, making local cultural exploration an absolute goldmine for budget conscious parents.”

LUXURY CRUISING RISES WITH DEMAND

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection’s Luminara
Luxury Travel Advisor’s The Dossier reports that “hotel clients (are) following their favorite land-based brands onto the water and the advisors going with them. Iconic land-based hospitality brands, such as The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, Four Seasons Yachts and Orient Express Sailing Yachts are among brands that are increasing luxury cruise bookings. Ragan Stone, GTC’s senior vice president of In the Know Experiences, noted that clients are coming from hotels and land-based itineraries, following a brand they already trust onto a ship. It’s a new category creation, and advisors who weren’t selling cruise a year or two ago are now having the conversation with land-loyal clients. The price points underscore the shift. While GTC’s ocean and river cruise business sells at the luxury tier, the average transaction runs about $10,000. The average yacht booking runs $40,000, a fourfold premium, and clients aren’t blinking. The Dossier reports that the U.S. cruise industry is forecast to reach record highs in 2026, with the overall market growing five percent. Across the business, insurance is also standing out on product performance.
